So you’re ready to buy a sex toy, but you don’t know which is right for you - you’ve heard them referred to as vibrators and dildos, but wonder what the difference is.
All your questions are about to be answered.
The Dildo and the Vibrator, aside from shapes, which can vary, are usually separated by one major difference - a motor.
Dildos are phallic shaped, traditionally do not provide external clitoral stimulation, and are made of a heavier material to more closely resemble the feel and heft of a real penis. As a rule, Dildos do not have a motorized component, and can come in many different colors and sizes.
Vibrators, on the other hand, can be round, oblong, phallic, or egg shaped; they can have nubs, bumps, ridges, and just about anything else you can think of. They also, as you may have guessed, vibrate - meaning there is a working motor inside providing any number of different pulses and vibrations. Some of them even move.
Whether you want a vibrator, or a dildo is really a personal choice, and depends on what your primary usage will be. Are you masturbating? Alone or with a partner? Is this the type of toy a partner would be using on you? Do you plan to use it on a partner? Does size matter for you?
Some women opt for a dildo and a vibrator, used together, for maximum effect. Some vibrators now come with a phallic attachment to give the effect of two in one. The downside of these combos are that one part can be dependent on the other, and do not allow for versatility. You might wish your vibrator didn’t have a huge penis attached to it, or that you didn’t need batteries to use your dildo.
There are some dildos that have an optional battery slot in the bottom that allow for vibration, and still others that offer a suction cup at the base, allowing the dildo to attach to bathtub sides, hardwood floors, and even some headboards, offering a hands free fantasy that can seem more immersive.
However, dildos don’t have the market cornered on hands free pleasure - some vibrators, via leg straps, also boast a hands free experience that focuses on clitoral stimulation. Many women - and some couples - have found these a fun diversion, particularly those that can be remote controlled.
Whichever side of the dildo vs. vibrator debate you side on, finding the right toy that fits your needs and lifestyle is all that really matters.
